Leveling is for surface irregularities—not every water problem

Low spots, settling and an uneven soil surface can make a lawn uncomfortable to walk on, harder to maintain and visually rough. Lawn leveling is intended to smooth those surface irregularities while allowing the existing turf to grow through the correction.

But an uneven lawn and a drainage problem are not automatically the same thing. If water is collecting because of the overall grade, runoff from another area or a drainage-system issue, simply adding leveling material may not solve the cause. We look at that distinction before recommending the work.

How leveling differs from top dressing

Top dressing is mainly used to improve the soil environment of an established lawn. Leveling is more targeted toward correcting bumps and shallow depressions. The material and depth used for leveling depend on the turf, the severity of the unevenness and how much correction can be made without burying the grass.

Some lawns need more than one pass

Trying to correct a deep depression all at once can cover too much of the existing turf. When a lawn needs significant correction, a staged approach may be more appropriate. We would rather explain that up front than promise a perfectly flat lawn from one application.

What helps us evaluate your property

• Wide photos that show the overall grade and uneven areas
• Close photos of the deepest dips or raised areas
• Whether water stands in the area after irrigation or rain
• Recent construction, utility work or soil movement
• Whether the goal is appearance, smoother footing, drainage, or all three

An on-site look may be necessary before we can separate a straightforward leveling project from a grading or drainage issue.
