Not every insect in the lawn is a lawn pest

Healthy turf is full of insect activity, and many insects are harmless or beneficial. Treatment makes sense when a pest is actually present at a damaging level or when prevention is appropriate for a known seasonal risk. Identifying the pest—and often its life stage—helps determine the right timing and treatment approach.

Common turf pests damage the lawn in different ways

Chinch bugs feed on turf and can create expanding yellow or brown areas that may resemble drought or disease. White grubs feed below ground on roots; severe damage can leave irregular dead patches and turf that pulls up unusually easily. Armyworms and sod webworms are leaf-feeding caterpillars that can thin turf quickly when populations are high.

Those patterns overlap enough that we do not recommend treating solely because the grass is brown.

Timing can matter as much as the product

Many turf insects change significantly as they develop from egg to larva or nymph and then adult. The life stage present can affect both the damage you see and which labeled control options make sense. That is one reason preventive and curative treatments are not interchangeable.

What helps us evaluate insect damage

• Wide photos of the damaged lawn
• Close photos of any insects, larvae or webbing you find
• Where the damage started and how quickly it spread
• Whether the turf lifts easily from the soil
• Recent watering, disease or insect treatments
• Your grass type, if known

If the evidence points toward disease or environmental stress instead of insects, we will say so. The goal is to treat the cause rather than simply applying an insecticide to damaged grass.
