Top dressing improves the growing environment at the surface

Top dressing places a thin, even layer of suitable material over an established lawn. When compost is used, the goal is not simply to cover the grass—it is to add organic matter at the soil surface and support better soil structure and growing conditions over time.

We keep the layer appropriate for the existing turf so the grass can continue growing through it. The right amount depends on the lawn, the material and what you are trying to accomplish.

Top dressing is not the same as lawn leveling

This distinction matters. Top dressing is primarily a soil-improvement service. Lawn leveling is focused on correcting bumps, shallow depressions and surface irregularities. A property can benefit from one, the other, or a combination of both depending on the goal.

Why aeration may be recommended first

On compacted lawns, core aeration can create openings that help top-dressing material move into the turf canopy and closer to the root zone. That does not mean every top-dressing project requires aeration; it means we look at the soil and lawn condition before deciding on the sequence.
