Thatch is not the same thing as grass clippings

Thatch is the layer of living and dead stems, roots and other plant material that builds up between the green turf and the soil surface. A small amount is normal. The problem begins when that layer becomes thick enough to interfere with water movement, create a soft or “puffy” surface, or contribute to pest and disease pressure.

That is why we do not recommend dethatching simply because a lawn has some brown material near the soil line. The depth of the layer and the condition of the grass matter more than the appearance alone.

Dethatching is intentionally disruptive

Mechanical dethatching or vertical mowing cuts through accumulated material so it can be removed. That can temporarily stress the turf, so timing matters. Warm-season grasses generally recover best when they are actively growing rather than during dormancy or periods of severe stress.

St. Augustine deserves extra care because it spreads primarily through above-ground stolons. Aggressive cultivation can injure those runners more severely than it would a turf with strong below-ground rhizomes.

Dethatching, aeration and top dressing solve different problems

If the main problem is compacted soil, core aeration may be more appropriate. If the goal is improving the soil environment, top dressing may fit. Sometimes those services can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable.

What helps us decide whether dethatching makes sense

• Areas that feel unusually soft or spongy underfoot
• Photos showing the turf surface and soil line
• Grass type, if known
• Recent aeration, top dressing or renovation work
• Whether the lawn is currently growing actively and recovering well

We would rather tell you that a lawn does not need aggressive dethatching than perform a disruptive service without a clear reason.
